Kyle Butters Named MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State freshman Kyle Butters has been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the league office this afternoon. Butters led Boise State to a pair of road upsets over nationally ranked opponents last week recording the match clinching victory in each contest. This is the first MW Player of the Week honor for the native of Wanganui, New Zealand.

Butters' Highlights from March 21-28

  • Kyle Butters recorded the match clinching singles victory in both of Boise State’s upset victories over nationally ranked opponents on the road last week as the Broncos defeated No. 51 UC Santa Barbara and No. 67 Cal Poly by 4-3 scores.
  • Butters went a combined 3-1 overall going 1-1 at No. 1 doubles and 2-0 at No. 4 singles ... he has now won five straight singles matches.
  • Down 3-0 at UCSB, Boise State rallied for the win with the match clinching team point coming from Butters on court four in the final contest of the day ... he battled through three tiebreakers and came from one set down to earn the decisive victory over UCSB’s Anders Holm 6-7(3), 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
  • In the Boise State victory at Cal Poly, Butters won both his doubles and singles matches ... he teamed up with Toby Mitchell on court one to defeat the Mustangs’ top tandem 6-4 ... the team match once again came down to a 4-3 score with the clinching point coming from Butters for the second straight time ... the freshman from New Zealand beat Cal Poly’s Josh Ortlip in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to hand the Broncos the win.
