Boise State Sweeps UTA; Advances to Championship Match Against Georgia State
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 19 Boise State University men’s tennis team earned its 20th victory (20-5) of the season by sweeping UT-Arlington 7-0, Friday, at the Appleton Tennis Center, to advance the championship match of the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Invitational. In the final, at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Boise State will face No. 57 Georgia State University (13-3).
The match began with the Broncos capturing the doubles point. At No. 3 Steve Robertson and Stanley Sarapanich turned in a dominant performance as they knocked off Alberto Agis and Dmitry Minkin 8-1. After Luke Shields and Piotr Dilaj fell to Gonzalo Bienobas and Daniel Omana 8-3, at No. 1, the doubles point would be determined at No. 2 doubles.
The pressure did not overcome Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson as the duo collected its team-leading 13th doubles victory in dual match play, over Javier Herrera and Diego Mattar 8-3, and secured the doubles point for the Broncos.
Boise State dominated in singles as it only dropped only one set en route the championship.
Luke Shields garnered his team-leading 18th singles victory (18-3) as he defeated Diego Mattar in the No. 1 position 6-4 and 6-0.
Blake Boswell remained undefeated at No. 2 singles (4-0) when he ousted Daniel Omana 7-5 and 6-1.
Piotr Dilaj battled Alberto Agis in No. 3 singles to a super tiebreaker and won the match 3-6, 6-1 and 10-7.
Steve Robertson improved to 13-2 in singles as he defeated Dmitry Minkin 6-3 and 6-4. Robertson has now won 10 of his last 11 matches.
Eric Roberson earned victory at the No. 5 position as he ousted Javier Herrera 6-4 and 6-4.
Brent Werbeck capped off the match by defeating Bienzobas in straight sets 7-6 and 6-4.
Boise State’s opponent, Georgia State has not lost a match point en route to the final as they defeated Cal Poly 5-0, Portland State 7-0 and Ball State 7-0. The championship match of the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Invitational will be held Mar. 31, at 1:30 p.m., at the Appleton Tennis Center at Boise, Idaho. Admission is free to all.
