BOISE, Idaho (3/28/08) - Boise State University’s 39th ranked men’s tennis team handed Brown University’s 73rd ranked team a 6-1 defeat Friday afternoon at the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho. The Broncos won the doubles point then followed up with wins in five of the six singles matches to claim the 6-1 victory over the Bears from the Ivy League. Boise State and Brown battled through a cold and windy day in the city of the trees as the Broncos picked up their sixth consecutive win to improved to 16-10 overall on the year, while Brown fell to 9-11 with the loss.
The doubles point went to Boise State as they claimed wins at the number two and three positions to earn the team point. The Broncos’ Paul Koenke and Eric Roberson teamed up at the number two doubles where they defeated Brown’s Noah Gardner and Sam Garland 8-4. Blake Boswell and Steve Robertson secured the doubles point for Boise State when they won the number three doubles 8-6 over the Bears’ duo of Chris Lee and Jonathan Pearlman. Brown did strike back winning the final doubles match at the number ones as Saurabh Kohli and Basu Ratnam defeated Boise State’s 13th ranked pair of Luke and Clancy Shields 8-7.
Up one point, Boise State started singles strong winning five of the six opening sets. The Broncos seized control early winning the number one, two, and six singles in straight sets. Luke Shields defeated Brown’s number one Saurabh Kohli 6-4, 6-4. Clancy Shields won the number two singles 6-3, 6-4 over the Bears’ Jonathan Pearlman, followed by Eric Roberson’s victory at the number six over Kendrick Au of Brown 6-3, 7-5. The match was decided following the conclusion of the first three singles matches completed with Boise State up 4-0.
Eventually, the Broncos stretched their lead to 6-0 with hard fought victories at the number four and three singles. Steve Robertson finished first rallying from one set down to win the number four singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Brown’s Sam Garland. Brent Werbeck completed the final Boise State victory handing Chris Lee a 6-4, 7-6 defeat at the threes.
Brown’s lone win on the day came at the number five singles where Noah Gardner rallied from one set down to defeat the Broncos’ Paul Koenke in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Brown will play the University of Denver at Boise State Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (Mountain) either at the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center or the Boas Indoor Tennis Center depending on the weather. Boise State’s next action will be Sunday at noon when they host #43 Denver (12-3).
