BOISE, Idaho (3/25/2010) - Boise State University’s men’s tennis team claimed its second victory of the day defeating UC Irvine 6-1 Thursday night at the Boas Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho. The Broncos opened the evening by claiming the doubles point, 2-1, then wasted no time in putting the match away with three quick singles victories by James Meredith, Alex Bothe and Filipp Pogostkin for a 4-0 advantage. The win over No. 47 UC Irvine improves No. 52 Boise State to 10-6 overall.  

Boise State opened the match by claiming the doubles point 2-1 over UC Irvine. Vicente Joli and Filipp Pogostkin teamed up at the number-two doubles to give the Broncos the early advantage defeating UCI’s Khunpol Issara and Sam Gould 8-5. However, the Anteaters rallied tying the doubles score at 1-1 when the ones went to the visitors 8-6, Steven Henderson and Zac Tsai defeated Boise State’s Alex Bothe and James Meredith to setup the decisive match at the number-three doubles.

The final doubles match went to an extra game before Boise State came out on top. The Broncos’ Jeff Mullen and Erik Sheldon held off UCI’s pair of Jon Kazarian and Fabian Matthews to claim a 9-7 victory and hand the home team the important doubles point heading into the singles portion of the competition.

Boise State opened the singles strong winning the first three matches to clinch the team victory by going up 4-0. James Meredith started things rolling with a win at the number one position 6-3, 6-0 over UCI’s Fabian Matthews. Alex Bothe followed shortly after taking the point at the number five by sweeping the first two sets 6-1, 6-2 from the Anteaters’ Steven Henderson. The clinching victory was at the number four singles where Filipp Pogostkin defeated Irvine’s Shimpei Suzuki in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 for the decisive 4-0 Boise State advantage.

With the overall match already decided UC Irvine broke through for its lone point when Khunpol Issara handed the Broncos’ Cristian Hodel a 6-2, 6-4 defeat at the number six singles to make the team score 4-1.

However, that was it for the Anteaters as Boise State claim the last two matches for the final 6-1 victory margin. Vicente Joli claimed Boise State’s fifth point after he won a hard fought straight set match with UCI’s Sam Gould 6-3, 6-4. In the final match they went to a tiebreaker after Boise State’s Harry Skinner and UC Irvine’s Zac Tsai split two sets.  Tsai won the first 6-3 followed by Skinner’s rally to claim the second set 6-3 to force the tie breaker. Down six (6-0) in the tie breaker the Broncos’ Skinner rallied to defeat Tsai 10-8 giving him a final victory of 3-6, 6-3 (10-8).

Boise State will return to action this weekend when the Broncos host the eight-team Boise State Spring Break Classic sponsored by Marriott SpringHill Suites. The tournament runs Saturday and Sunday with matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. both days.
