Broncos Open Spring Break Classic with Shutout
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 61 ranked Boise State men's tennis team opened up its weekend in the 2011 Boise State Spring Break Classic with a dominating performance against Eastern Washington University, Friday (March 25) afternoon, as the Broncos earned a 6-0 shutout against the Eagles to earn a spot in the semifinals Saturday morning.
Due to rain all of Friday's matches were moved inside to the BOAS Indoor Tennis Complex. Each dual began with singles competition, and doubles were only to be played in the instance of a 3-3 tie after singles.
Boise State managed to improve to 9-10 overall (1-1 Western Athletic Conference) with the win, including a 5-2 record at home this spring. The Broncos raced out to the decisive victory over EWU (7-9) thanks to straight set wins in all six singles matches.
Jeff Mullen got things rolling for Boise State on Friday as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Julian Sanchez at No. 3 to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage. He would be followed by Michael Gilliland, who scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Chris Eriksson at No. 6 to extend the Boise State lead to 2-0 in the dual.
Andrew Bettles would put the team win within reach next at No. 2 for the Broncos as he knocked off Mario Navarro, 6-3 6-4, to push the dual score to 3-0.
Freddy Walsh wasted no time at all in clinching the team win for Boise State, as he topped Kyle Koetje, 6-1, 6-4, to give the Broncos the decisive fourth point in the dual.
Boise State continued to keep its foot on the throttle with just two singles matches to go, winning at No. 4 and No. 1 to secure the sweep over the Eagles. Nathan Sereke scored the next win for the Broncos at No. 4 as he beat Stefan Simikic, 7-5, 6-2. Damian Hume, who is currently ranked No. 89 nationally in singles, would then complete the shutout with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Fernando Mussolini at No. 1.
With the win Boise State is done competing for the day, as the rain schedule has moved the Broncos semifinals match to Saturday morning. Boise State will meet Wichita State University at 8 a.m. at BOAS on Saturday.
