Boise State Defeats No. 66 BYU, 5-2
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 19 Boise State University men’s tennis team recorded its 17th victory of the season as it defeated No. 66 BYU, 5-2, Thursday, at the Appleton Tennis Center at Boise, Idaho, and record its 12th win over a ranked opponent this season.
The crucial doubles point came down to a tiebreaker at number No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2, Clancy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich paired together for the first time this season and earned the victory over Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez, 8-5. Then Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson then dropped their match to Cassidy Mears and Cale Planck, 8-2, to tie the doubles point at 1-1.
After Luke Shields and Piotr Dilaj fell behind 6-7, the duo broke BYU’s James Ludlow and Dominic Kaufhold to even the match at 7-7. The two teams exchanged service points and the match shifted to a tiebreaker tied at 8-8. With the doubles point up for grabs, the pair from Boise State put forth a dominant effort and captured the tiebreaker 8-2, to collect the doubles point.
Boswell, playing No. 4, garnered the first singles point for the Broncos as he ousted Sanchez in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
Roberson then followed the lead of his doubles partner and earned the victory over Planck, 6-3 and 6-3, to put Boise State ahead 3-0.
Luke Shields captured the decisive match point for Boise State at the No. 1 position, as he defeated James Ludlow in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2, to improve to 16-3.
The final victory of the match was recorded by Clancy Shields as he defeated Kaufhold in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3 and 10-5.
Other Boise State participants include, Dilaj who lost to Hand in a tiebreaker 6-3, 4-6 and 11-9. While Brent Werbeck was defeated by Mears also in a tiebreaker 4-6, 6-2 amd 10-7.
The Broncos will now prepare for the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Tournament which will be held Mar. 28-31, at Boise, Idaho. Boise State will face Gonzaga, Wednesday, Mar. 28, at 9:00 a.m., at the Appleton Tennis Center.
