Broncos Score 5-2 Upset Over No. 40 New Mexico

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 59 ranked Boise State men's tennis team scored its second win over a top 50 ranked opponent this season, Saturday (March 19), as the Broncos topped No. 40 New Mexico, 5-2, at the BOAS Indoor Tennis Complex.

Boise State (7-9 overall, 1-0 Western Athletic Conference) managed to improve to 5-9 against ranked teams, and 2-9 against those in the top 50, thanks to strong play in both doubles and singles. The Broncos won two of three doubles matches against the Lobos (11-5) before scoring victories in the first three singles matches to clinch the upset.

Andy Bettles and Filipp Pogostkin would earn the first Boise State win of the day at No. 3 doubles as they raced past Conor Berg and Carl Ho, 8-2. New Mexico responded with a win at No. 2 however, to put the doubles point resting on the finish at No. 1.

Damian Hume and Scott Sears wasted little time garnering the early 1-0 advantage for the Broncos, as they beat Phil Anderson and Jadon Phillips, 8-5.

Boise State took hold of its early momentum following doubles competition and continued to roll into singles play. The Broncos would win at No. 5, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 to clinch the team victory with a 5-0 lead.

Jeff Mullen would score the first singles win of the day for Boise State as he beat Joe Wood, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 to extend the Broncos' lead to 2-0. Sears put the team win within reach next at No. 3 as he knocked off Anderson, 7-5, 6-2.

Bettles would seize the opportunity to clinch the dual win for Boise State next at No. 4 where he took down Ho, 6-4, 6-4, to give the Broncos the decisive 4-0 lead over UNM. Nathan Sereke kept the scoring streak going for Boise State with a win at No. 6, as he beat Berg, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, to give the Broncos a 5-0 lead in the dual.

The Lobos would earn a pair of wins at No. 2 and No. 1 singles to narrow the final score to 5-2, but the rally was too little too late.

Boise State will look to build upon its big win on Saturday as the Broncos host Idaho and San Francisco in a pair of duals on Sunday (March 20). Boise State already played the doubles portion of its dual against the Vandals, Saturday morning, which Idaho scored two wins to secure a 1-0 lead heading into Sunday.

The Broncos and Vandals will compete in singles competition at 10 a.m., Sunday morning. Boise State will conclude its busy weekend Sunday afternoon with a showdown against San Francisco at 2 p.m. Both duals are scheduled to be played at the Appleton Tennis Center, weather permitting.
