BOISE, Idaho - The No. 71 Boise State men's tennis team suffered a big blow both nationally and in the Western Athletic Conference championship race, Thursday (March 18) afternoon, with a 5-2 loss against No. 26 Fresno State in the first round of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala.
The Broncos fell behind early after failing to win the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and No. 2. No. 22 Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier first beat Alex Bothe and James Meredith, 8-5, to open up the dual. They were followed by Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby who beat Vicente Joli and Filipp Pogostkin, 8-6, to secure the doubles point.
Boise State couldn't get anything going from there either as the Broncos lost three straight singles matches to end the dual. No. 123 Tejesvi Veerepalli earned the first singles win for Fresno State with a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Skinner at No. 3. He was followed by Boutillier, who beat Pogostkin 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4. Alapati wrapped up the dual for the Bulldogs with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Cristian Hodel at No. 6.
With the loss, Boise State falls to 6-6 overall. More importantly, the Broncos are now 1-1 in WAC play. Fresno State improves to 11-5 overall with a 3-0 record against conference opponents.
Boise State will continue play at the Blue Gray Classic on Friday with a consolation bracket dual at 8:30 a.m. The Broncos will face the loser of Notre Dame and Middle Tennessee State, who are playing this evening.
