Boise State Sweeps Arizona 7-0
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men's tennis earned an impressive victory Friday when the Broncos swept the Pacific 12 Conference's Arizona Wildcats at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise. Boise State opened the contest by sweeping all three doubles matches then followed with six straight victories in singles. The win improves Boise State to 13-5 overall while Arizona fell to 4-10 on the year.
The Broncos opened the match with James Meredith's and Nathan Sereke's 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles over the Wildcats' top doubles team of Sumeet Shinde and Kieren Thompson. The team point was clinched by the No. 3 doubles pair as Boise State's duo of Andy Bettles and Filipp Pogostkin won a tight set 9-7 over Arizona's Mario Uquidi and Andre Vidaller.
With the point settled the No. 2 doubles competition went to a tie break with the Broncos' Damian Hume and Scott Sears defeating Sebastian Ionescu and Giacomo Miccini 7-6 (7-2).
Boise State won the match with three straight-set singles victories at the No. 4, 3, and 1 positions. Nathan Sereke started singles off with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Arizona's Sumeet Shinde. Not long after Andrew Bettles put the Broncos up 3-0 when he defeated Mario Urquidi 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
The match clinching victory came from James Meredith, ranked 48th nationally, at the number one position where he claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over the Wildcats' Andre Vidaller.
With the match decided Boise State's Damian Hume, 55th nationally, went to a tiebreaker to defeated Giacomo Miccini. Hume won the first set 6-3 only to see Miccini battle back to tie the match with a 6-2 set two victory. Hume took the victory by winning the tiebreak 10-4 to make the team score 5-0.
Filipp Pogostkin took the No. 5 singles win in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 over Arizona's Kieren Thompson. The day concluded with Garrett Patton defeating Sebastian Ionescu 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at the sixth position.
Boise State will be back in action next weekend when the Broncos host the Boise State Spring Classic March 23-25.
