Men's Tennis to Take On Nation's Best at Blue Gray Classic

WHAT’S HAPPENING:

The No. 22-ranked Boise State men’s tennis team heads to Montgomery, Ala., this weekend to participate in the Blue Gray Tennis Classic held Mar. 19-22 at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center. The Broncos will be one of 16 nationally ranked teams to participate in the tournament and enter as the No. 2 seed behind Tennessee.

Round 1 (Mar. 19) Boise State vs. Oklahoma 11 a.m.

Round 2 (Mar. 20) Boise State vs. Mississippi State/Notre Dame Winners Bracket at 1:30 p.m./Consolation Bracket at 8:30 a.m.

Additional rounds to follow, depending on the wins and losses in the early rounds

 

BLUE GRAY CLASSIC HISTORY:

The Boise State Broncos attend the Blue Gray Classic nearly every season. In 2008, they were 2-1 in dual matches while Tulsa ended up the overall winner of the tournament. Boise State has been crowned champion of the tournament just once, in 1998, when Daniel Merkert was also named the Broncos’ sole Blue Gray MVP.

 

2009 BLUE GRAY COMPETITORS:

This year’s Blue Gray Classic includes 16 top-75 teams from around the country. The teams include (ranking): Alabama (24), Auburn (30), Boise State (22), Fresno State (43), Hawaii (75), Middle Tennessee State (56), Mississippi (48), Notre Dame (26), Oklahoma (41), Oklahoma State (25), Penn State (55), Tennessee (4), Texas Tech (33), Virginia Commonwealth (54), William and Mary (61) and Wisconsin (29).

 

LAST TIME OUT:

The Broncos enter the weekend after earning two ITA Mountain Region wins at home last weekend. The Broncos first defeated BYU 4-3 on Saturday morning and followed with a 6-1 win over Montana State that afternoon. Clancy Shields was named as the WAC Player of the Week after his excellent play against both teams.

 

BOISE STATE:

Boise State enters the weekend with a 9-6 record and jumps four spots in the ITA national rankings to No. 22. The Broncos hold a 6-5 record against nationally ranked opponents as well as a 2-1 away record and a 1-0 neutral record this season.

 

Updated ITA singles and doubles rankings were release on Mar. 17 with three Broncos remaining in the singles ranks and one doubles team also in the rankings. Senior Clancy Shields drops 16 spots to the No. 38-ranked singles player in the country. Senior Kean Feeder holds the No. 78 spot in the rankings, 17 behind his previous ranking. Freshman James Meredith dropped 10 spots to the No. 80 rank in the country. In doubles rankings, Feeder and Meredith fall 14 spots to the No. 68-ranking this week.
