Broncos Rebound with 4-3 Win Over No. 45 San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 66 ranked Boise State men's tennis team earned a split of its' weekend road trip to San Diego, Calif., Sunday (March 14), as the Broncos scored a much need 4-3 upset over No. 45 University of San Diego.
    Boise State (6-5) entered the weekend looking to improve upon a 1-4 record away from home, but after dropping their dual against unranked San Diego State on Saturday, 5-2, the Broncos were searching for a big win. They got just that on Sunday as Boise State managed to secure the upset over USD (7-5), which improves the Broncos' record against nationally ranked opponents to 2-4 this spring.
    Boise State took a 1-0 advantage into singles competition against the Toreros after winning the doubles point with a sweep of all three matches. Vicente Joli and Filipp Pogostkin earned the first doubles win for Boise State, beating Casey Powers and Thibault Visy, 8-5. The Broncos secured the doubles point in the No. 1 match, as Alex Bothe and James Meredith knocked off Nikola Bubnic and Charl Wolmarans, 8-5.
    Bothe extended Boise State's lead to 2-0 early on in singles action, as he beat Nils Schive, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 4 match. After USD responded with a win at No. 6, Filipp Pogostkin scored again for the Broncos with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Visy at No. 3.
    With the dual win in close sight, Cristian Hodel secured the Bronco victory as he topped Abdullah Hashem in the No. 5 singles match, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Toreros managed to narrow the final score with wins at No. 2 and No. 1, but not until after Boise State had already recorded the win.
    Next on the schedule for the Broncos is a trip to the Blue Gray Tennis Classic, March 18-21, in Montgomery, Ala. Boise State does not return home until March 25 when the Broncos host the University of Idaho and UC Irvine.
