No. 35 Bronco Men's Tennis Upsets No. 30 Notre Dame at Blue Gray Tennis Classic

MONTGOMERY, Alabama The No. 35 Boise State men’s tennis team bounced back to defeat No. 30 Notre Dame after an upsetting loss to Penn State on Friday at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic. The Broncos (11-10) played to a 4-3 upset win over the Fighting Irish (10-5) in the main draw consolation match, improving their tournament record to 2-1. The Fighting Irish suffered their second loss of the Blue Gray Classic, falling to 1-2 in the tournament.

The Broncos fought back from a 1-0 deficit after dropping the doubles point to Notre Dame, earning four wins in singles to top the Fighting Irish. The only Bronco doubles team to earn a victory was No. 41 Luke and Clancy Shields who topped Brett Helgeson and Sheeva Parbhu in the No. 1 position, 8-3.

Notre Dame was able to earn wins at the No. 2 doubles spot with Andrew Roth and Santiago Montoya squeaking past Boise State’s Paul Koenke and Eric Roberson, 9-7. The Irish’s Stephen Havens and Tyler Davis downed Broncos Piotr Dilaj and Steve Robertson, 8-3, in the No. 3 doubles match.

The Broncos were able to pick up wins at the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 positions to clinch the come-from-behind win. No. 55 Clancy Shields shocked No. 81 Parbhu in the No. 2 singles match, winning 6-0, 6-4. Boise State’s Roberson also earned a relatively quick win, defeating Notre Dame’s Davis, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles match to put the Broncos ahead 2-1. Boise State’s Robertson fought off Havens in the No. 4 spot, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 while Koenke finished on the positive end of a tough battle with Daniel Stahl at the No. 5 spot, winning 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 to clinch the team title for Boise State.

Notre Dame was able to earn two singles victories, the first with No. 17 Helgeson defeating No. 59 Luke Shields in the No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 and the second when Roth topped Bronco Brent Werbeck in the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5.

The Bronco victory was the third this season on a neutral court, bringing their neutral record to 3-3. Full tournament information, schedules, and scores can be found at www.bluegraytennis.com.
