MONTGOMERY, Ala. After a triumphant 4-1 victory over No. 46 Oklahoma on Thursday afternoon, the No. 35 Boise State (10-10) men’s tennis team had their fun spoiled when No. 65 Penn State earned a quarterfinal round upset over the Broncos at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic. The Nittany Lions (6-5) recorded their second upset of the tournament, the first came over No. 26 Alabama, topping Boise State, 4-1, Friday afternoon.
It took only singles play for Penn State to earn their upset win, winning four of the six matches. The Broncos were able to earn one victory in singles play with Steve Robertson defeating Ryan Gormley, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles slot.
Penn State earned a quick win at the No. 6 position with James Dwyer defeating Boise State’s Paul Koenke, 6-4, 6-0 while No. 62 Michael James topped No. 59 Luke Shields in a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot. PSU’s Brendan Lynch defeated Brent Werbeck at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-4 while Eddie Bourchier earned a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Piotr Dilaj at the No. 4 position to seal the Lions’ 4-1 team victory.
The No. 2 singles match between Boise State’s No. 59 Clancy Shields and PSU’s Adam Slagter was in a two-set split with Slagter winning set one 7-5, and Shields winning set two, 6-2, before play was ceased.
Boise State will continue their tournament play on Saturday, March 15 in a match with No. 30 Notre Dame, playing in the main draw consolation match.
