No. 41 Boise State Men's Tennis Knocks Off No. 38 William and Mary

BOISE, Idaho The No. 41 Boise State men’s tennis team continued a perfect weekend of play by pulling a 6-1 upset over No. 38 William and Mary on Monday afternoon. The Broncos’ weekend began with a 6-1 win over No. 67 Minnesota on Saturday and concluded with Monday’s victory at the BSU Boas Tennis Center. With the win Boise State (8-8) now brings their season average to .500.

Boise State pulled ahead with an early lead after going 2-1 in doubles play, earning the doubles point. William and Mary (11-6) was able to earn the first victory of the day with Kavi Sud and Sebastien Vidal snagging an 8-2 win over Blake Boswell and Steve Robertson at the No. 3 doubles position. From there BSU took control, winning the No. 1 doubles match with No. 55 Luke Shields and Clancy Shields defeating Alex Cojanu and Keziel Juneau, 8-2. Helping to seal the doubles point victory, Paul Koenke and Eric Roberson worked to an 8-6 win over Dominic Pagon and Richard Wardell of William and Mary.

In singles play, the Broncos were just as dominant allowing the Tribe to only win one of the six matches. Boise State’s Brent Werbeck was the first to earn a singles victory topping WM’s Juneau, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match. BSU’s Koenke followed suit in the No. 5 match defeating Vidal 6-0, 6-3 while Roberson topped Wardell in the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-4 to seal the Boise State team dual victory. Helping the Broncos to a 5-0 lead, No. 60 Clancy Shields locked in a 7-6, 6-2 win over Pagon in the No. 2 singles match. Older brother Luke Shields (#64) fought off the Tribes’ Cojanu in the No. 1 match, 6-3, 7-5, to earn Boise State’s final team point. The Tribe was able to win one singles match on the day with Marwan Ramadan defeating Robertson in a close, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory to make the final score 6-1.

The Broncos extend their perfect home season to 6-0 and improve to a 6-7 record against ITA ranked teams. Boise State will continue their season this coming weekend when they play host to No. 50 San Diego State University on Saturday, March 8 and No. 22 Pepperdine on Sunday, March 9. Both matches will be played at BSU’s Appleton Tennis Center (weather permitting) and are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
