FRESNO, Calif. After two days of rain delays the No. 28 Boise State men’s tennis team finished their weekend of play, falling to No. 71 Fresno State Sunday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Broncos (6-8) began their dual against the Bulldogs (8-2) on Saturday, only to stop after approximately an hour due to downpours. The remainder of the match was pushed until Sunday where the Broncos fell 4-2 to their Western Athletic Conference rival Fresno State.

The two teams began by playing their singles matches which allowed the Bulldogs to clinch the team title without counting the doubles matches; therefore, no doubles matches were played.

The Broncos’ two points were scored at the No. 1 singles spot and the No. 5 spot. No. 64 Luke Shields defeated Fresno States’ Rudolf Siwy, 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot while Steve Robertson made quick work of Siddharth Alapati, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot. Robertson’s match was the first completed singles match of the day followed by a Bulldog win by Martin Nilsson over Eric Roberson, 6-2, 7-6 (6) in the No. 6 singles match to tie the team score.

Fresno pulled ahead 2-1 when Mirko Zapletal topped No. 60 Clancy Shields 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match. Luke Shields win for the Broncos then came in to tie the team score 2-2 before the Bulldogs were able to fight off BSU to clinch their final two points for the team title.

The Broncos move to a 6-8 record with the loss, including a 1-4 record against nationally ranked teams. The Broncos have struggled on the road, posting a 1-6 record but are flawless at home with a 4-0 record. BSU will look to March and April where it hosts 10 dual matches and one tournament and travels only to one tournament to finish out the spring season. The Broncos will host Minnesota on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m. with a dual match against William and Mary on Monday, March 3.
