BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State University men’s tennis team fell in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship to Mississippi, 4-0, at the Midtown Tennis Club at Chicago.
The Broncos opened the match by dropping two of the three doubles matches.
Steve Robertson and Clancy Shields fell at the No. 1 position, to Erling Tveir and Eric Claesson, 8-3. Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson responded for Boise State capturing their match, 8-5, over Jonas Berg and Robbye Poole, to even the contest. With the doubles point on the line, all attention turned to the number twos where Luke Shields and Piotr Dilaj faced off against Jakob Klaeson and Matthias Wellerman. A battle waged between the two teams, fighting and clawing for every point but in the end Klaeson and Wellerman prevailed, 9-7, to capture the doubles point for Ole Miss.
In singles, Boise State dropped three matches and the contest was called due to time constraints.
Blake Boswell, playing No. 5, fell in straight sets to Karl Norberg, 6-1 and 6-1.
At No. 4, Eric Roberson was defeated 6-2 and 6-4 by Robbye Poole.
Luke Shields (8-1) lost his first singles match of the dual season to Erling Tveit, 7-5 and 6-3.
Boise State will now prepare to face No. 18 Texas at 8:00 a.m. (MT), Feb. 17, at the Midtown Tennis Club at Chicago.
