What’s Happening - The No. 16 ranked Boise State University men’s tennis team will travel to Chicago to compete in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Friday, Feb. 16 at 9:00 a.m.
The Broncos received the 12th seed in the tournament and will face No. 4 ranked nationally and 5th seeded, Mississippi in the first round.
The National Indoor Championships feature the top 16 teams in the country. The Boise State men’s tennis team earned its position among the elite by capturing the ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff Championship, Jan. 20, 2007.
"This is the Woodstock of college tennis," said head coach Greg Patton. "This is our chance and our stage."
The Team - The Broncos are 7-1 on the season in dual match play after defeating four opponents ranked in the top 75 nationally, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, including No. 9 Stanford at Palo Alto, Calif., 5-1. Boise State’s other marquee victories came against No. 49 San Diego, 4-3, No. San Diego State, 4-3, No. 64 UNLV, 4-0, No. 73, UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, and a 5-0 victory of New Mexico in the Championship match of the ITA Mountain Regional. The only loss of the season came Feb. 10, against No. 15 USC at Marks Stadium at Los Angeles, 5-2.
"We earned the No. 12 seed," said Patton. "But we know we have to continue to look at this as a building block to establishing the foundation of the (tennis) program."
The Players The Broncos feature seven of the top 20 players in the region including number one ranked Luke Shields.
Luke Shields enters the match ranked 15th nationally and first is the mountain region according to the ITA. L. Shields is undefeated this season in dual play (8-0) and has been a stabilizing force atop the Boise State lineup. He was named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 29, after capturing two victories in the number one position on the Broncos undefeated road trip to the Bay Area. In the match against Ole Miss, he will possibly square off against No. 40, Erling Tveit.
Clancy Shields, ranked 94th nationally and 4th in the region, is 6-1 in dual matches including wins at Stanford, San Diego State and San Diego. C.
