BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State men's tennis team received its second Western Athletic Conference individual honor of the 2011 season, Tuesday (Feb. 8), as Scott Sears was named the Verizon WAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 31 - Feb. 6.
This marks the first POW honor ever for Sears. He joins Jeff Mullen as the second Bronco men's tennis player to win the award this season. Mullen received the honor for Jan. 12-18.
Sears, a sophomore from London, England (St. Bedes), received the nomination after going undefeated at No. 3 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles over the weekend against No. 28 Virginia Tech and No. 30 Minnesota. Sears overcame first set losses in both singles matches to rally for his two wins. He beat Pedro Graber of Virginia Tech, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, and Tobias Wernet of Minnesota, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8). His doubles win also came in dramatic fashion as he and partner Damian Hume beat Will Beck and Graber, 8-7 (1), in Boise State's narrow 4-3 loss to the Hokies.
The No. 35 ranked Broncos (2-4 overall, 0-0 WAC) are currently preparing for another challenging weekend ahead as the men travel to California to face a pair of top 20 opponents. Boise State will meet No. 20 Pepperdine on Saturday (Feb. 12) before taking on No. 6 UCLA on Sunday (Feb. 13). Both duals are scheduled for 1 p.m.
