IRVINE, Calif. The Boise State men’s tennis team dropped a heartbreaking dual match Thursday afternoon to University of California Irvine (1-1) falling 4-3. The No. 27 ranked Broncos (5-2) dropped their second straight match in their fourth down-to-the-wire dual of the season.

“We are beat up right now and have played so many close matches this season,” said head coach Greg Patton. “I can say that we are one of the most exciting teams to watch in the nation right now though because we push every match to a close one.”

The Broncos were able to take the early lead, winning the doubles point by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Steve Robertson and Brent Werbeck were the first to earn a victory on the day topping UCI’s Trevor Dobson and Stephan Stege, 8-5 in the No. 3 match. Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson topped UCI’s Alex Sundling and Ajay Ahluwalia with the same score in the No. 2 doubles match before Paul Koenke and Luke Shields fell to Victor Lamm and Khunpol Issara, 8-7, in the No. 1 doubles match.

After going up 1-0 after doubles play, the Broncos and Anteaters battled through the singles matches to determine the team champion. Bringing the team scores to a tie, No. 5 singles player Stege topped BSU’s Boswell in a quick 6-2, 6-0 match. Robertson quickly put the Broncos ahead in the team scores winning the No. 3 singles over Dobson, 6-3, 7-5. Giving the Broncos their third point of the day, Shields dominated Sundling, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match. From there the Anteaters won three straight matches to seal their 4-3 win. In the No. 4 match, Issara topped Roberson, 7-6, 6-4 while Lamm fought through a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Werbeck at the No. 2 spot. In the deciding match Ryan Mayer edged out Bronco Paul Koenke to win the No. 6 match, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The Broncos hope to rebound quickly from the loss and look toward No. 8 University of California-Los Angeles who they will face on Friday, February 8 in Los Angeles. From there BSU will finish out their weekend on Saturday, facing No. 6 University of Southern California. The Broncos are 2-1 against ITA ranked teams and 2-1 against unranked teams.
