Boise State Travels to the Golden State

What’s Happening - The 18th ranked Boise State University men’s tennis team will travel to California to face two nationally ranked opponents. Friday, Feb. 9, the Broncos will face the team tied for 73rd in the nation, the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The following day, Saturday, Feb. 10, Boise State will square off against USC. The Trojans enter the match 5-0 and ranked No. 15 in the country. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m., at the hostile confines of Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.

The Team - The Broncos are a perfect 6-0 in dual play after defeating No. 48, the University of San Diego, 4-3, and No. 49, San Diego State, 4-3, in San Diego, Calif. Boise State has also picked up wins against No. 9 Stanford, 5-1, in Palo Alto, Calif., and Santa Clara University, 5-2 in Santa Clara, Calif. The Broncos collected their other two wins at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Team Playoff where they advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships by sweeping UNLV 4-0 and New Mexico 5-0.

The Players The Broncos feature seven of the top 20 players in the region including number one ranked Luke Shields.

Luke Shields enters the match ranked 15th nationally and first is the mountain region according to the ITA. He is also ranked third in the region in doubles along with his partner Piotr Dilaj. L. Shields is undefeated this season in dual play (6-0) and has been a stabilizing force atop the Boise State lineup. He was recently named Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 29, after capturing two victories in the number one position on the Broncos undefeated road trip to the Bay Area.

Clancy Shields, ranked 94th nationally and 4th in the region, is 4-1 in dual matches including wins at Stanford, San Diego State and San Diego. C. Shields was named WAC Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 22, after going 2-0 in the ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff including capturing the decisive match point on a diving volley to advance the team to the National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, Feb. 16-18.

Six other members of the team contributed with singles victories in dual match play including Blake Boswell (No. 9, 2-1), Eric Roberson (No. 13, 2-3), Dilaj (No. 14, 3-1), Brent Werbeck (No. 16, 2-1), Steve Robertson (No. 17, 2-0), and Stanley Sarapanich (1-1).
