BOISE, Idaho The No. 26-ranked BoiseState men’s tennis team was unable to stop No. 29-ranked Vanderbilt in the second day of the ITA National Team Indoor first and second rounds, falling to 0-2 on the weekend. The Broncos (3-3) couldn’t hold off the Commodores (1-1), 4-3 win, dropping the doubles point and three singles matches on Sunday afternoon at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
In doubles play, Clancy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich made a quick win out of Bryant Salcedo and Nick Cromydas, winning at the No. 2 spot, 8-3. In the No. 1 match, Adam Baker and Alex Zotov picked up an 8-6 win over Kean Feeder and James Meredith to tie up the team race at one point apiece. With the Broncos up 7-4 in the No. 3 doubles match, it looked as if BoiseState was going to clinch the doubles point. However, the Commodores were able to earn a come back, forcing the match to an 8-8 tie and forcing a match deciding tie break. Charlie Jones and Alex DiValerio were able to pull off the 9-8 (9-7) nailbiter of a match over Blane Shields and Matt Solomon to help Vanderbilt clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, No. 90-ranked Feeder quickly tied up the team score to 1-1 when he downed Cromydas, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 2 match. Zotov put the Dores ahead again with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 85-ranked Sarapanich in the No. 5 spot. Vanderbilt was then able to go up 3-1 when Salcedo upended No. 22-ranked Clancy Shields, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles match. BoiseState’s James Meredith brought the Broncos back into the game with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Vijay Paul at the No. 3 spot. Vanderbilt was able to clinch the match point in the No. 6 singles match when Jones defeated Blane Shields 6-4, 6-4. BoiseState’s Cristian Hodel finished out the match for the Broncos on a high note, winning a back-and-forth battle over Baker in the No. 4 spot. Hodel earned a 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 win to bring the final match score to a 4-3 win for Vanderbilt.
The Broncos will prepare to head to Seattle where they will take on Oklahoma and Washington in dual matches. BoiseState will first take on the Sooners at 2 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 7 and will follow with a Sun., Feb. 8 match against the Huskies at 12 noon.
