Broncos Drop First Match of the Season to No. 4 UCLA, 6-1

LOS ANGELES Coming off an upset win over No. 14-ranked Pepperdine on Sunday, the No. 37-ranked Boise State men’s team couldn’t keep the magic alive on Tuesday, dropping, 6-1, to No. 4-ranked UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Broncos are now 3-1, heading into the ITA National Team Indoor First and Second rounds this coming weekend.


The Broncos gave all they had, but couldn’t pull their second-straight upset after winning one doubles match and one singles match each.


In the No. 1 doubles spot, senior Kean Feeder and freshman James Meredith battled to a 9-7 win over Haythem Abid and Amit Inbar, earning the only doubles win for the Broncos on the day.


Senior Clancy Shields proved why he is ranked No. 22 in the national singles poll with a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Abid at the No. 1 singles spot.


The Bruins’ Matt Brooklyn and Harel Srugo were able to defeat Stanley Sarapanich and Clancy Shields in the No. 2 doubles match, 8-2, while Michael Look and Nick Meister earned an 8-5 win over Blane Shields and Matt Solomon in the No. 3 spot to clinch the doubles point.


No. 67-ranked Brooklyn was able to hold off No. 90-ranked Feeder in a 6-3, 6-3 match at the No. 2 singles spot. Srugo picked up a 5-7, 6-2 (10-6) over Meredith in the No. 3 spot while Look earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Cristian Hodel in the No. 4 spot. No. 78-ranked Meister earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 85-ranked Sarapanich to clinch the Bruin’s fourth team point and the team victory at the No. 5 spot. In the No. 6 singles match, Inbar downed Blane Shields, 6-3, 6-3 to aid with the Bruin’s 6-1 win over the Broncos.


The Broncos continue their season on Saturday when they host one of 15 ITA National Team Indoor First and Second rounds. The Broncos host No. 12 Stanford, No. 27 Auburn and No. 29 Vanderbilt. Boise State will begin play at 4 p.m. at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club against Stanford.
