Palo Alto, Calif. In a match of top 25 teams, the Boise State University men’s tennis team (#25) defeated number nine Stanford 5-1.
After the match was delayed an hour because of rain, the Broncos stormed out of the gates capturing victories at the first four positions including number 15 ranked, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Luke Shields defeating Stanford’s All-American, Matt Bruch. After dropping the first set 6-3, Shields dominated the following sets 6-1 and 6-3 en route to victory.
After falling in the opening set, Clancy Shields (#94) would not be denied further and came back strong, winning the match against Richard Wire, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Playing in the number three position, Piotr Dilaj defeated Blake Muller in straight sets 6-1 and 6-2, to collect the third point of the match for Boise State.
Eric Roberson won the match-up of number fours over Paul Morrissey 6-1 and 6-2.
In a hard fought battle at the number five position, Blake Boswell and Eric McKean needed two tiebreakers to decide their match but McKean eventually prevailed 7-5 and 7-6.
Brent Werbeck collected the final singles victory for the Broncos when he defeated Kevin Kaiser 6-3 and 6-3.
The Broncos collected the victory in their first two dual matches at the ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff and at Stanford bringing their season record to 3-0.
Boise State will now face Santa Clara University on Jan. 28 at noon in Santa Clara, Calif.
