Broncos to Face Stiff Competition This Weekend

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State men's tennis team will travel to Stanford, Calif. this weekend to play in two matches in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Broncos will face No. 50 Santa Clara, Friday Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. before taking on either No. 6 Stanford or Saint Mary's, Saturday. Depending on if the Broncos win or lose Friday, they will face the respective winner or loser from the Cardinal-Gael matchup.

National Rankings...

Boise State men's tennis was ranked 48th in the first Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings of 2012. Damian Hume and James Meredith received national rankings individually.

Hume checks in at No. 25 on the heels of a successful fall season that included the Mountain Region singles title and a run to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.

Meredith is ranked 31st, nationally. His fall season included two wins at the ITA All-American Championships.

What Happened Last Time...

The Broncos are coming off a successful weekend where they picked up wins against No. 62 Saint Mary's and Eastern Washington. Boise State defeated the Gaels 5-2 in impressive fashion, winning the first four points of the match.

In the second match of the day, the Broncos squared off against Eastern Washington who had lost to Saint Mary's in its season-opener. The Broncos rolled to a 6-1 win.

Looking at Santa Clara...

No. 50 Santa Clara enters its second week after posting two 7-0 victories over both UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis. The Broncos began the season at a school-best No. 50 in the ITA preseason rankings Despite the high ranking, the Broncos do not have a singles member in the latest ITA rankings.

Looking at Stanford...

No. 6 Stanford is 2-0 this season in dual matches with a 4-3 win over No. 23 Tulsa and a 5-2 victory over No. 20 North Carolina last weekend. The Cardinal is led by senior Ryan Thacher who is ranked 37th in the nation and is followed by junior Matt Kandath who is currently 75th.

Looking at Saint Mary's...

 No. 64 Saint Mary's enters the weekend with a 1-1 record, defeating Eastern Washington in its season opener before falling to Boise State, 5-2. The Gaels are led by junior Maxime Olivan who earned All-WCC Honorable Mention honors last season as the No. 1 player. Olivan teamed up with senior Gavin Leon last season to earn a spot on the All-WCC First Team as the Gaels top doubles squad.
