BOISE, Idaho -- The 37th-ranked Boise State men's tennis team opened up their 2009 home season on Sunday when they played host to the University of Oregon. The Broncos were able to pick up a 5-2 victory over the Ducks at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club and improve to a 1-0 record on the season.
The Broncos began by winning the doubles point after the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams picked up wins. In the No. 2 match, Kean Feeder and James Meredith made quick work of Oregon's Ayrton Wibowa and Ric Mortera in an 8-1 win. Blane Shields and Matt Solomon sealed the doubles point win for the Broncos when they defeated Jose' Izquiedro and Mike Myhead in an 8-5 match at the No. 3 spot. The Duck's Marcos Verdasco and Alex Cornelisson were able to earn an 8-4 win over Clancy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich at the No. 1 spot.
In singles competition, the Broncos picked up four additional victories at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Clancy Shields, who is ranked No. 22 in the nation defeated Verdasco in the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-3. Feeder (ranked #90) followed suit in the No. 2 spot with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Cornelisson. Boise State's Cristian Hodel earned a 7-5, 6-3 win over Wibowa in the No. 3 spot while Meredith nearly swept Izquiedro, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 4 spot to seal the Broncos' team victory.
The Duck's were able to pick up singles wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots with Myhed topping Boise State's Sarapanich, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 5 spot. Duncan MacDonald-Korth of Oregon earned a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Blane Shields for the Duck's second team point.
The Broncos continue competition next week when they travel to No. 62 UC Santa Barbara, No. 14 Pepperdine and No. 4 UCLA from Jan. 24-27. They return home to host the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. Their first match of the ITA tournament will be at 4 p.m. against No. 12 Stanford. They continue action on Feb. 1 against either No. 27 Vanderbilt or No. 29 Auburn at 1 p.m.
Note: Two Broncos, Nick Gourley and Freddy Walsh, played in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Jan. 16 adn 17. In the first round singles play, Gourley fell to Stanford's Blake Mueller, 6-3, 6-0, while Walsh fell to Andrew Kells of USC, 6-1, 6-4. The pair joined as a doubles team, falling to David Nguyen and Abdullah Magdas of USC, 8-1. On Saturday, the two played in the first round of conselation singles where Walsh fell to Richard Wire of Stanford, 6-0, 6-1, and Gourley fell to Ted Kelly of Stanford, 6-0, 6-2.
