Broncos Host ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff

What’s Happening - The Boise State men’s tennis team will host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Team Playoff at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho, on January 20, 2007. The playoff will feature the top four teams in the Mountain Region competing for a place in the National Team Indoor Championship which is held in Chicago, Feb. 16-18.

 

The Teams- In the first match of the day beginning at 9:30 a.m., Boise State will take on the Running Rebels of UNLV. In the second match of the day BYU will face the University of New Mexico starting at 12:30 p.m. The championship match will feature the winners of the earlier matches competing for their invitation to join 15 other elite teams in Chicago.

 

The Players The Broncos feature seven of the top 20 players in the region including number one ranked Luke Shields.

 

Luke Shields enters the match ranked 15th nationally according to the ITA. He is also ranked third in doubles along with his partner Piotr Dilaj. Luke led the Broncos during the fall with 10 victories including five of them coming against opponents ranked in the top 100 (#12, 18, 22, 41 and 87). He also qualified for the quarterfinals at the All-American tournament and the ITA National Individual Indoor Championships.

 

Clancy Shields also enters the ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff nationally ranked at number 94. He advanced to the finals of the ITA Mountain Region Championships and earned the number four ranking in the region. Clancy enjoyed a team-best five match winning streak during the fall which included victories over three nationally ranked opponents (#32, 63 and 90).

 

Blake Boswell, although only a freshman, has turned heads in the Mountain Region and earned the number nine ranking. He was the lone freshman to compete for the Broncos during the fall season including participating in the qualifying portion of the All-American Tournament after winning in the final round of the pre-qualifying tournament. Boswell is also ranked fourth in the region in doubles with teammate Eric Roberson.

 

Roberson is ranked 13th in the region as an individual after advancing to the quarterfinals of the Mountain Region Championships. He combined with teammate Dilaj to post the lone doubles championship for the Broncos in the fall along with a team-best eight doubles victories.

 

Dilaj enters the ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff ranked 14th in the region and third in doubles with teammate Luke Shields.

 

Brent Werbeck registered a four match win streak during the fall and earned the number 16 ranking in the region.

 

Sophomore Steve Robertson along with Clancy Shields are the number seven ranked doubles team in the region after the duo earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors last season. Robertson is also the 17th ranked individual in the region.
