Men's Tennis Opens Season with Oregon Ducks at Boise Racquet and Swim Club

BOISE, Idaho The 37th-ranked Boise State men’s tennis team will take to the court for the first time during their 2009 spring season on Sunday when they host the University of Oregon at 1 p.m. The Broncos’ match, held at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club on Jan. 18, will be the first of at least 15 home dual matches held in Boise.


Dropping two spots from their 2008 fall preseason ranking of No. 35 (ITA rankings), the Broncos boast three nationally ranked singles players entering the season. Senior Clancy Shields leads the way with a No. 22 rank while also holding the No. 1 spot in the Mountain Region singles rankings. Senior Stanley Sarapanich boasts a No. 86 rank in the national polls while sitting at No. 26 in the regional rankings. Finally, senior Kean Feeder ranks No. 91 in the nation while also holding the No. 4 spot in the region.


No Boise State doubles team reached the Jan. 6 ITA doubles poll, however, the doubles team of Feeder and Clancy Shields sits at No. 3 in the region.


The University of Oregon enters the weekend with two dual matches on Jan. 16 in Eugene. They will first face Northern Arizona followed by Portland State having two matches under their belts when they travel to Boise to face the Broncos. Participating in the West Region, the Ducks have no current regionally or nationally ranked players.


The Broncos team features four seniors: Clancy Shields, Sarapanich, Feeder and Blane Shields; one junior, Nick Gourley; three sophomores: Joey Coleman, Erik Sheldon and Stefan Simikic; as well as three freshmen: Michael Gilliland, Cristian Hodel and Freddy Walsh.
