LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State had a strong opening on the first day of the USTA/ITA Men’s Tennis Mountain Region Championships Wednesday in Las Vegas. Four of five singles players advanced with victories while the Broncos’ doubles teams split. Collecting wins in singles today were Brendan McClain, Garrett Patton, Toby Mitchell and Brian Foley, while the doubles team of McClain and Patton won as well.
Seven Broncos will move into the singles round of 64 on Thursday as Andy Bettles, seeded No. 1, and Thomas Tenreiro, seeded eighth, join the action after first round byes. The duo will also team up for doubles tomorrow as well after having a bye today as the third seeded pair overall.
The opening day of the tournament began today with doubles matches in the morning. Boise State’s McClain and Patton took on Idaho State’s duo of Josh Goodwin and Cody Miller, the Broncos downed their instate rivals easily by an 8-0 score. The Bronco pair will now face the team of Lucas Fumagalli and Steven Young of Air Force in tomorrow’s round of 32.
The other team in action today was the sophomore tandem of Foley and Mitchell who faced the ninth-seeded pair at the tournament in Idaho’s Odon Barta and Artemiv Nikitin. It was a battle throughout between the two rival schools with the Vandals outlasting the Broncos for an 8-6 victory. Foley and Mitchell now move into the consolation bracket round of 32 where they will take on BYU’s Zach Drost and Ethan Vaughn on Thursday.
Freshman Abe Hewko is also competing in doubles but with the odd number of Broncos attending the tournament he was paired with Justin Archer from the University of Utah. The team lost their first round match 8-2 to Alex Grubbs and Andrew Parks from Air Force.
The Broncos had five members competing in singles today as well led by No. 14 seed Garrett Patton who quickly put away New Mexico’s Bryan Cunningham in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. The other three winners in the opening round won in straight sets as well with No. 21 seed Brendan McClain defeating Fredrik Peterson from Utah State 6-4, 6-0; Mitchell downed Jack McCullers of Air Force 6-3, 6-3; while Foley recorded a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Weber State’s Todd Fought.
Mitchell and Foley will have what appears to be the toughest road in singles on Thursday facing seeded players. Mitchell will take on No. 7 seed Gilad Berman from UNLV, Foley will face Nevada’s Andrew Poustie the 24th seed.
The second day of the competition begins with doubles at approximately 10 a.m. (Mountain Time) on Thursday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, singles will follow immediately afterwards.
