Dar Walters Day One Results
BOISE, Idaho - Kyle Butters advanced to the round of 16 in singles and doubles with partner Ryland McDermott to lead the Broncos on the opening day of the Dar Walters Fall Classic at Boise State on Friday. Boise State’s four representatives in the tournament went a combined 5-4, 3-3 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. The Dar Walters Fall Classic continues Saturday and Sunday with action beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day.
“I am pleased with the way we competed today, it was a great way to start for Ryland McDermott who played one of the best players in the region in his opener,” said head coach Greg Patton. “These fall tournament’s are all about getting experience and sometimes getting knocked down to see how quick you get back up again. Kyle (Butters) is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and this is a great way for him to get his competitive edge going as he heads into regionals in a couple weeks, something he wants to win as one of his goals. The other three I just wanted to get experience playing some tough matches and they did well overall.”
Butters opened his tournament play with a convincing straight sets victory 6-1, 6-2 over Lewis-Clark State’s Yonas Woldetsadik in the A flight’s round of 32. The win advanced the sophomore from New Zealand into Saturday’s round of 16.
Butters and McDermott teamed up in doubles to win their lone match easily 6-1 over BYU’s Sam Tullis and Garret Vincent in the round of 32.
McDermott a freshman from Las Vegas opened his Boise State career Friday morning in singles play against BYU’s Keaton Cullimore ─ seeded No. 1 ─ falling in two sets 6-2, 6-1. McDermott will move into the consolation draw on Saturday.
Boise State’s Danny Moyer and Greg Wischer competed in the singles B flight on Friday where they both won in the round of 64 before falling in the next stage. Moyer opened with a two-set victory over Whitman’s Ben Kirsh 6-1, 6-3, then fell to Montana’s Yannick Schmidl 6-3, 6-2.
Wischer also opened with a victory in the first round defeating Air Force’s Austin Gula in a second set tiebreaker 6-2, 7-6(1). The sophomore from Grand Forks, N.D., then advanced into the round of 32 where he fell to Utah State’s Andrew Nakajima 6-2, 6-0.
