Platzeck and Shackleton Lead Broncos

POCATELLO, Idaho - Pedro Platzeck and Harvey Shackleton split singles matches to lead Boise State during the first two days of the Bank of Commerce Invitational at Pocatello, Idaho. In all the four Boise State participants have gone a combined 2-5 in singles and 5-3 in doubles matches at the tournament hosted by Idaho State University.

The tournament began on Thursday with the Broncos experiencing some success in doubles. Tim Heslin and Harvey Shackleton split on the day winning their first before falling in the round of 16. Meanwhile, Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck reached the quarterfinals off a first round win and a victory in the round of 16, followed by a loss in the quarterfinal round.

Heslin and Shackleton opened up with a hard fought 8-6 win over Montana State’s duo of Grant Wood and Max Petrak, then followed with a 8-5 loss to Idaho’s Mark Kovacs and Carlos Neto in the round of 16.

Lalovic and Platzeck also opened the tournament Thursday with a victory to reach the round of 16. They defeated Idaho’s Guilherme Scarpelli and Peter Shin 8-4 in the first round, then advanced to the quarterfinals via a 8-4 win versus a duo from Idaho State. Unfortunately, the Boise State tandem fell in the quarterfinal late Thursday night 8-4 to Weber State’s Kris Van Wyk and Stefan Cooper.

Singles competition started Thursday night with a few matches being played in attempt to get ahead of expected bad weather later in the weekend. The only Broncos to see action Thursday in singles was Tim Heslin who one his first set, but could not hold on against Idaho’s Shin who rallied to win 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).

Singles began in full Friday with a whole slate of contests with the other three Broncos opening their singles play at the Bank of Commerce Invitational.

Pedro Platzeck split two Friday afternoon as the junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, fell in the first 6-3, 6-4 to ISU’s David Felix. He regrouped later in the day collecting a win in the consolation round of 16 over Idaho State’s Adam Hornby 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). The win advances him into Saturday’s consolation quarterfinals.

Sophomore Harvey Shackleton received a bye into the black flight’s round of 16 where he put away Idaho State’s Ryan Boddington in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. The win moved him into the quarterfinal round Friday afternoon where he faced Gielie Van Schoor from Weber State falling 7-6(3), 6-2 to the Wildcat.
