Broncos Go 6-1 Saturday in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Boise State’s Jack Heslin swept a pair of singles matches on Saturday to advanced to Sunday’s consolation semifinals. Heslin defeated Brandon Sutter from Stanford in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, then followed with a tightly contested consolation quarterfinal contest over Pepperdine’s Dane Esses in a 10-point tiebreaker 6-3, 6-7(3), 1-0 (5). Heslin’s consolation semifinal opponent was still to be determined when this article was posted.

Boise State’s doubles team of Kyle Butters and Heslin went 1-1 on Saturday. They opened with a 8-5 victory over San Diego State’s tandem of Sander Gjoels-Anderson and Marko Babic. The Bronco duo then fell in the main draw’s quarterfinals to USC’s Robbie Bellamy and Logan Smith in a tough 8-6 loss.

On the day Boise State went 6-1 overall on the second day of the Battle in the Bay Classic at San Francisco, 5-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles.

Of the four Broncos only Heslin (singles and doubles) and Butters (doubles) entered the day with any title hopes at the Battle in the Bay Classic.

Butters was one of three Broncos to play in pick-up singles matches where they went 3-0. Butters defeated Cody Rakela of UC Santa Barbara in straight sets 7-6 (2), 6-1. Brian Tran took down Iowa’s Jake Jacoby in two sets 6-3, 6-1, while Morgan Stone won in two sets 6-1, 6-2 over San Diego’s Alexandros Araouzos.
