LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Toby Mitchell's three-set singles victory clinched the win for Boise State as the Broncos rallied to defeat San Diego State 4-2 and advance to Sunday's Mountain West championship match. After nearly a three-hour weather delay and dropping the doubles point and first singles match, Boise State was forced to rally from 2-0 down against the Aztecs with singles victories from Lewis Roskilly, Kyle Butters, Thomas Tenreiro and Mitchell.
"I have never had a team that has escaped from the blade of the guillotine more than this team," said coach Greg Patton. "Fighting back, coming back is in their blood. Our seniors were the ones who orchestrated this victory, they refused to lose. Brian (Foley) and Toby (Mitchell) were both down a set and clawed themselves and the team into tomorrow's final. I am so proud of this team!"
The Broncos have now won six straight matches and 13 of their last 15 contest. Today's win gives Boise State its 17th 20-win season since 1987 as the Broncos improved to 20-9 overall. It also advances Boise State into tomorrow's MW title match against the winner of the UNLV versus Fresno State semifinal match (played late Saturday after the Boise State-SDSU match). At stake on Sunday for Boise State is a chance for the Broncos to win their fifth consecutive MW championship and 17th conference title overall, as well as their 19th berth all-time into the NCAA National Team Championship.
The long day began with San Diego State taking an early lead by claiming the team doubles points with victories at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
Facing a one point deficit heading into singles the Broncos were tasked with having to win four of the six singles matches to get the victory. Unfortunately, things started slow for the blue and orange as Boise State split the six opening sets to increase the pressure. Shortly after the first sets were finishing up the weather delay took place giving the Broncos a chance to collect themselves.
Once play resume, the Broncos hole grew to 2-0 Aztecs when Marko Goles-Babic defeated Boise State's Pedro Platzeck 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
Down two, Boise State began to rally. Roskilly started it off when he came back from a 3-0 set one deficit to win 12 straight games to take the No. 6 singles match 6-3, 6-0 over Raul de la Torre. The win improved the sophomore from England to 11-11 overall.
Kyle Butters brought the Broncos even when he dispatched Sander Gjoels-Andersen 6-3, 6-4 on court four. The MW Freshman of the Year extended his team-best win streak to 14 as he improved to 24-10 overall and 14-0 at No. 4 singles.
With the team score tied at 2-2, Thomas Tenreiro gave Boise State the lead when he won a second set tiebreaker to sweep San Diego State's Hendrik Jebens 6-4, 7-6 (6). The Bronco senior has now won six consecutive matches to improve to 13-2 this spring and 20-3 overall on the year.
That left just two singles matches remaining with the Broncos needing to win one. The break through victory was Mitchell's No. 3 singles contest. The senior from Somerset, England, rallied from dropping set one to winning the next two over SDSU's Milen Ianakiev 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3. That victory was the sixth straight for Mitchell and the seventh time he has clinched the team victory in Boise State's current run of 13 wins in its last 15 contests.
That left Brian Foley's match at No. 1 singles which was stopped once Mitchell clinched the team victory. At the time Foley's match was abandoned he had rallied from losing set one to battling for the win in set three trailing the Aztecs' Freddy Gelbrich 2-6, 6-3, 5-6.
