Stats

BOISE, Idaho - Jack Heslin led Boise State with a win at No. 3 singles in a 4-1 loss to Mountain West champion Utah State Saturday night in Boise. Heslin’s win was the lone point the Broncos could manage to get versus the Aggies who clinched their second straight regular season MW title with the win.

This was potentially a preview of next week’s Mountain West Championship quarterfinal as the Broncos and Aggies stand a good chance of facing off again in the opening round at Boise on Friday.

Utah State opened the match winning the doubles point over Boise State 2-0 with wins on courts one and two.

The Broncos found themselves down 3-0 following defeats at No. 1 and 5 singles where Boise State’s Kyle Butters fell 6-1, 6-2 and Greg Wischer lost 6-1, 6-4, respectively.

Heslin then brought Boise State back within two when he downed Utah State’s Sam Serrano in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. He rallied from 4-3 down in the first to win the set, then led the entire way in set two. He improved to a team-best 19-13 overall, 12-10 in duals and 3-1 in MW play.

The deciding point came at No. 2 singles where the Broncos’ Brian Tran could not hold off USU’s Jaime Barajas falling in two sets 6-3, 6-2.
