ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Boise State men’s tennis lost another heartbreaker on Sunday coming up on the short end of a 4-3 score at New Mexico in a Mountain West Conference match. Boise State recorded a doubles win by Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck, as well as singles victories by Jack Heslin, Wyatt DeMulling and Platzeck.

The decisive doubles match went to a tiebreaker, while the final two singles matches went three sets in the tight battle between the Lobos and Broncos.

"I'm really proud of the way the guys battled today," said head coach Greg Patton. "We gave it our all, but it just got away from us. I am really excited about how Jack (Heslin) has been coming on for us at No. 1 singles. We just need to have more guys step up so we can get a couple of these close matches."

Play began with doubles where the Lobos took the team point 2-1 with wins on courts one and three. Boise State’s lone victory came on court two where Lalovic and Platzeck put away UNM’s Dominic West and Sean Baklini 6-3. The Broncos No. 3 doubles tandem of Mattia Bedolo and DeMulling were edged in a tiebreaker 7-6 as New Mexico claimed the point.

Down one heading into singles play the Broncos had to win four of the six contests to claim the victory. Platzeck netted the blue and orange on victory when he easily dispatched UNM’s Stepan Holis in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 to tie the team score at 1-1.

The Lobos responded with two straight wins on courts three and two, respectively, to move the Lobos to within on of the team victory up 3-1.

Jack Heslin pulled one back for the Broncos at No. 1 singles where he defeated Bart Van Leijsen in another tightly contested match 7-6, 6-4. DeMulling evened the team score up at 3-3 when the junior rallied from one set down to beat the Lobos’ Jorge Escutia 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

That set up the decisive team point at No. 6 singles where UNM’s Sean Baklini rallied past Boise State’s Ryland McDermott to win in three sets 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

Boise State will close out the regular season next Saturday (April 21) when they host the Idaho Vandals at 6 p.m. at the Appleton Tennis Center, followed by the MW Championship at San Diego State April 27-29.
