BOISE, Idaho - Boise State blew past rival Idaho 5-0 in a men’s tennis match Saturday morning at the Appleton Tennis Center at Boise. The 22nd-ranked Broncos won the doubles team point on Friday night, then tallied singles victories Saturday morning by Toby Mitchell, Brian Foley, Abe Hewko and Garrett Patton to claim the victory and improved to 22-4 overall. The win also extended the Broncos home win streak to 10 straight as they move to 11-1 at home this season.

In doubles which were played on Friday night, the Broncos opened with Mitchell and Nathan Sereke recording the first victory of the night by a 8-3 score over Idaho’s Sam Laudon and Andrew Zedde on court two. That was followed by the point clinching win on court three where Hewko and Aidan Reid put away the Vandals’ Odon Barta and Filip Fichtel 8-4. The final doubles match went to Idaho’s Jose Bendeck and Artemiy Nikitin in a tiebreaker 8-7 (6) over Brendan McClain and Patton.

Mitchell started the Broncos roll in singles with a straight set 6-4, 6-1 victory against Cesar Torres from Idaho to extended the Blue and Orange’s advantage to 2-0. The sophomore from England is now 18-7 on the year and 10-3 in duals this spring.

Foley gave Boise State a 3-0 edge with his three-set victory 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on court five over Zedde. The Bronco sophomore from Henderson, Nev., is now 19-9 on the year and 12-5 in duals.

Freshman Abe Hewko’s rally from one set down to win a three-set marathon including tiebreakers in the second and third sets clinched the team victory for the Broncos. The Palm Desert, Calif., native downed Idaho’s Fichtel 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) to claim the win and record his fourth duals win of the spring improving to 4-0 and 8-3 overall.

At the time of Hewko’s victory on court six, Patton was in the middle of a third set tiebreaker as well. Like Hewko, the junior from Boise also rallied from one set down and through two tiebreakers to dispatch Idaho’s Bendeck 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). Patton is now 21-12 on the year in singles competition.

The remaining two singles matches were abandoned once the team victory was decided. But Boise State’s Andy Bettles was leading on court one 6-3, 2-6, 5-4, while McClain had rallied from 3-1 down in the second set to lead 4-6, 7-5, 5-3 when play stopped.
