Broncos Record Win Number 21 with 5-2 Victory Over UC Irvine

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State defeated UC Irvine 5-2 in a men’s tennis match Friday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center to extend the 22nd-ranked Broncos’ home win streak to nine. Boise State claimed the doubles point then tallied singles victories by Garrett Patton, Brendan McClain, the match clincher by Nathan Sereke, followed by Toby Mitchell. The Broncos improved to 21-4 overall with matches against Idaho and San Diego State on the slate for tomorrow.

McClain and Patton started the Broncos off on the right foot with an easy 8-3 doubles win on court one over UCI’s Jonathan Hammel and Tyler Pham. The Boise State tandem improved to 15-9 on the year.

The Broncos clinched the team doubles point when Brian Foley and Aidan Reid downed the Anteaters’ Rafael Davidian and Jonathan Poon 8-4 at the third position. The No. 1 doubles contest with Boise State’s Mitchell and Sereke playing was stopped at 6-6 once the team point was clinched.

Garrett Patton started singles just as quick as he did in doubles rolling over UC Irvine’s Hammel on court three 6-1, 6-4. The junior from Boise became the third Bronco to reach 20 wins this season improving to 20-12 overall.

Down two, UC Irvine cut into the Bronco advantage when Pham defeated Boise State’s Thomas Tenreiro 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. However, it did not take long for the Broncos to get the two point lead back when McClain put away Davidian from UCI in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to improve to a team-best singles mark of 24-8 on the year.

That led to Nathan Sereke’s match clincher as he edge Mitchell out for the honors by about two minutes. Sereke was playing on court one where he dispatched Ryan Cheung in what was a tight two set affair before the Bronco pulled it out 6-4, 6-4. The senior from Sweden is now 13-11 on the year.

With the match decided, Boise State’s Mitchell followed Sereke with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court six over the Anteaters’ Shuhei Shibahara to give the Broncos a 5-1 advantage. The sophomore from England is now 17-7 on the year in singles competition.

The final singles match went to UC Irvine on court five where Caryl Hernandez defeated Boise State’s Brian Foley in a 10-point match tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
