April 9, 2017

BOISE, Idaho - Pedro Platzeck's win at No. 4 singles clinched the 4-3 victory for Boise State over instate-rival Idaho Sunday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center. In a match that went back and forth, the Broncos opened by winning the doubles point with wins by Kyle Butter and Jack Heslin on court one, while Brian Tran and Ryland McDermott claimed a win at No. 3 doubles to secure the team point. Boise State then won three of the six singles matches earning victories from Butters, Heslin and the decisive win by Platzeck.

The victory gave Boise State a split on the day as the Broncos bounced back following a 4-2 loss in the morning to Air Force.

Boise State opened the contest with Tran and McDermott's 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles over Idaho's Felipe Fonseca and Estaban Santibanez. That was followed by Idaho taking No. 2 doubles 6-3 to tie it up at one all.

Butters and Heslin's then recorded the point clinching win at the No. 1 position. The Bronco tandem defeated the Vandals' Mark Kovacs and Carlos Longhi Neto 6-3.

Up one heading into the singles competition, Boise State found itself in a 2-1 hole after two matches as the Vandals claim victories on courts six and five, respectively.

The Broncos rallied starting with Butters straight-set victory at No. 1 singles following a set two tiebreaker. He downed Idaho's Kovacs 6-3, 7-6 (4) to improve to 12-14 on the year.

Heslin then gave Boise State the lead again after he won in three sets at No. 3 singles. He defeated Carlos Longhi Neto 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to improve his team-best overall record to 18-12 and 11-9 in duals.

Idaho then tied it up once again as Fonseca rallied on court two to defeat Boise State's Tran in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Tran is now 14-10 on the year and 11-9 in spring duals.

That setup Platzeck's decisive match for Idaho bragging rights. The sophomore from Brazil won the first set by two, then watched Lucas Coutinho rally to take set two. Platzeck then regrouped and dominated the final frame to put it away for Boise State 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
