BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men’s tennis fell 5-2 in a tightly contested match to UC Santa Barbara at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center on Thursday. UCSB rallied to claim the doubles point 2-0 after it looked like the Broncos might came away with the point but came up short. Then five of the six singles matches went to three sets before the Gauchos pulled out the victory.
“We had grit today, we fought hard and were in every match against such a good team as UCSB,” said head coach Greg Patton. “We fought for our lives toady with five of the singles matches going three sets and had the doubles point on our rackets only for it to slip away, this shows me that we are headed in the right direction and headed for the promise land. For me its was a victory in so many ways, in how our guys are fighting and in how we are getting better with each match, that is the most important thing.”
Boise State earned singles victories from Greg Wischer on court six and Brain Tran at No. 3 singles, while Kyle Butters, Jack Heslin and Pedro Platzeck all lost three-set battles.
Boise State is now 1-1 on this six-match homestand and will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against Pepperdine at the Appleton Tennis Center.
UCSB won a tightly contested doubles point as all three matches went down to the wire before the Gauchos won 2-0.
On court two Boise State’s pair of Heslin and Wischer were up 5-3 in a tiebreaker but could not put it away as UCSB’s Anders Holm and Nicolas Moreno rallied with four straight points to win the match 7-6(5).
Not long after, the Broncos’ Pedro Platzeck and Brian Tran came up just short of upsetting the 9th-ranked doubles team in the nation of Simon Freund and Morgan Mays up 5-4 and 40-15 with three match points but could not finish it off. The Gauchos pair rallied with three straight points to tie the match at 5-5, then clinched the team point for UCSB by winning the final two games for a 7-5 victory.
Singles was just as tight and a battle with five of the six matches going to three sets. UCSB claimed a early 2-0 lead in the team score when Cody Rakela defeated the Broncos’ Morgan Stone in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
The Gauchos then claimed No. 2 singles in a three-set contest where the Broncos’ Heslin rallied from one set down to force a third only to fall 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Within one point of defeat, Boise State earned its first team point with a win on court six as Wischer came back from 4-3 down in the third set to win the match 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 over Chase Masciorini.
That left Boise State needing to win the final three singles matches trailing 3-1 in the team score. Unfortunately, it did not go the Broncos way but they went down fighting all the way.
The match was clinched for UCSB on court four where Anders Holm rallied past Boise State’s Pedro Platzeck 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
At No. 1 singles Kyle Butters rallied from dropping the first set to win the second and force a third. He trailed 4-1 in the third when he rallied to tie it up at 4-4 and then again at 5-5. However, UCSB’s Morgan Mays regrouped to take the final two games to win the match 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
The final singles match off the court was at No. 3 where Brian Tran rallied after dropping the opening set. He took the second set 6-3 sending the contest into a third set. The freshman from Australia trailed 3-1 in the third, then rallied eventually winning the match 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 for Boise State’s final team point.
