BOISE, Idaho - Garrett Patton recorded the match clinching victory as No. 20 Boise State defeated No. 42 Minnesota 5-2 in men’s tennis Sunday afternoon at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. Boise State returned to its winning ways this afternoon claiming the doubles point then added singles victories by Brendan McClain, Thomas Tenreiro, Patton and Brian Foley to secure the victory. Today’s victory over the Big Ten’s Golden Gophers improved the Broncos to 11-3 on the year. It also marked the return of the Blue and Orange to Boise after spending the previous six weeks on the road where they racked up an impressive 9-2 mark.

The day started off with Boise State claiming the team doubles point with victories on courts two and three. Andy Bettles and Tenreiro gained the first win for the Broncos when they defeated Minnesota’s tandem of Eric Freuh and Leandro Toledo 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. That was followed by the point clincher on court three where Toby Mitchell and Nathan Sereke downed the Gophers’ Juan Ramirez and Franz Sydow 8-3.

The doubles competition was stopped once the team point was secured by the Broncos, but Boise State’s team of McClain and Patton were battling Minnesota’s 22nd-ranked duo of Jack Hamburg and Mathieu Froment on court one. At the time the match was stopped the Broncos’ team was trailing 6-4.

Minnesota tied the team score up early in the singles portion of the match when No. 84 Toledo defeated Boise State’s No. 83 Bettles on court one 6-3, 6-3. McClain gave the one-point advantage back to the Broncos shortly after with his straight set 6-2, 6-4 win on court five. The freshman from California is now 17-6 overall and 12-2 in duals this spring, including six straight wins.

Thomas Tenreiro then extended the Boise State lead to 3-1 following his 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory on court three over Hamburg for Minnesota. The Miami, Fla., native is now 13-7 on the year and 7-3 in duals.

But before Patton put the match away for the Broncos, the Golden Gophers pulled to within one point at 3-2 with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory on court two where UM’s Ruben Weber downed Sereke.

Patton recorded the match clincher in three sets tallying a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory on court four over Minnesota’s Froment. The junior from Boise is now 13-10 and 6-5 in duals. Shortly after Patton’s win, Brian Foley notched the final Boise State point also winning in three sets by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to improve to 12-6 and 5-2 this spring.
