LA JOLLA, Calif. - Boise State’s doubles team of Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell went 4-1 over the weekend and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship Saturday afternoon. The Boise State duo led a Bronco contingent of four doubles teams that went a combined 7-4 in a field of 128 at the prestigious tournament in the San Diego metro area. All four Bronco teams won their opening matches, but only Butters and Mitchell advanced past the second round.

“I am really happy with how the team played here in San Diego this weekend,” said head coach Greg Patton. “Everyone won their opening matches of the tournament and we had some big wins over good doubles teams. Kyle and Toby played strong and got a couple of big victories beating a teams from USC and UC Irvine. They also defeated the second seeded team who are one of the top juniors teams in the country. Now we turn our focus to Michigan State next Saturday at home.”

Butters and Mitchell recorded four straight wins including victories over Southern Cal’s tandem of David Laser and Logan Smith in a tiebreaker 9-8 (5) in the opening round on Friday. They also tallied a solid 8-3 win over UC Irvine’s pair of Justin Agbayani and Jonathon Poon to advance into Saturday’s round of 16.

After defeating an unattached junior team, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, in the round of 16 in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 Butters and Mitchell moved into the quarterfinals where they fell to Stanford’s Thomas Fawcett and Maciek Romanwicz 6-0, 6-1.

The tournament began on Thursday for Danny Moyer and Greg Wischer who downed an unattached team 8-6. They then moved into the round of 64 on Friday where they lost to UCLA’s Max Cressy and Martin Redlicki 8-3.

Brian Foley and Pedro Platzeck opened the tournament against a unattached duo recording an easy 8-1 victory to advance into the round of 64. They then fell in Friday’s afternoon session to UC Davis’ pair of Alec Adamson and Adam Levie 8-5.

The final Bronco duo was Lewis Roskilly and Thomas Tenreiro who tallied an 8-5 victory over Furman’s Cameron Green and Adam Steryous to open the tournament. They then fell 8-4 in the next round to an unattached team.

The field of 128 doubles teams included a mix of collegiate players, top juniors and unattached pairs. Matches versus non-collegiate players are considered as exhibition contests for each Boise State team and do not count in rankings or records for the season.

Next up for Boise State is a big home match next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the Big Ten Conference’s Michigan State Spartans.
