MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Boise State men's tennis team opened its Blue Gray National Tennis Classic title defense strong with a first round sweep over the 36th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide Friday morning in Montgomery, Ala. Boise State, ranked 41st nationally, claimed the doubles point with victories by the teams of Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton, as well as Andy Bettles and Thomas Tenreiro.
The Broncos rode the momentum from the doubles point into the singles competition claiming victories by Garrett Patton, Brendan McClain and the match clincher by Nathan Sereke as Boise State knocked off the Southeastern Conference school to advance to tomorrow's semifinal round against No. 21 Clemson (12-1) out of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"I am so proud of the way our team came out and played today, we played awesome!" said head coach Greg Patton. "This win against a tough nationally ranked Alabama team puts us in position to play a top-25 team in No. 21 Clemson tomorrow. If we play well it could potentially get us back into the discussion with the top programs in the country. Today's win gives us a chance to make a statement to move up in the rankings and it gives us a shot not only to do it against a top program but against the team that defeated us in last year's NCAA Tournament."
Boise State opened the match strong taking the early lead in doubles when McClain and Patton defeated the Tide's Nikko Madregallejo and Daniil Proskura by a 6-3 score on court one. The victory by the Broncos top doubles team gives them an overall record of 11-4 this year. The point clinching win came on court two where the Broncos' duo of Bettles and Tenreiro (7-4 record in 2013-14) won a hard fought contest 6-5 (3) over Alabama's Sean Donohue and Becker O'Shaughnessey to put the Blue and Orange up 1-0 in the team score.
The No. 3 doubles team of Toby Mitchell and Nathan Sereke took on the Crimson Tide's Andrew Goodwin and Stuart Kenyon and were tied 4-4 when the match was stopped once the team point was decided.
The Broncos were equally solid in singles as well riding the momentum gained from the doubles point into a sweep of the Crimson Tide with three straight victories. Garrett Patton started the ball rolling when he put away Alabama's Saxon Buehning in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 on court four. Patton moved his singles record to 10-8 on the year.
McClain moved Boise State within one of the match victory when he tallied a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win on court five against the Tide's Nikko Madregallejo. The true freshman improved to 12-6 overall on the season and 7-2 in duals this spring.
The match clinching point came from four-year veteran Nathan Sereke on court two where he recorded the Broncos third straight-set singles victory of the day 6-4, 6-4 over Alabama's Becker O'Shaughnessey, ranked 72nd nationally. With the win Sereke increased his singles record to 5-5 overall and 5-3 in duals.
The match was stopped once the team victory was decided. However, three other Broncos were in action on Friday. Playing on court one was No. 90 Andy Bettles who was in the process of upsetting 12th-ranked Daniil Proskura of Alabama 6-5 (5), 4-2 when the contest stopped. Tenreiro was on court three where he was trailing 4-6, 2-3, while Mitchell was up on court six ahead 6-5 (6), 2-5 when play ended.
Boise State will step onto the court against No. 21 Clemson at 12:30 p.m. (Mountain) Saturday afternoon at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
