Pedro Platzeck had the match clinching victory.

BOISE, Idaho (Feb. 7, 2016) - Freshman Pedro Platzeck won in three sets at No. 6 singles to hand Boise State men’s tennis an exciting 4-3 victory over Santa Clara Sunday afternoon at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. Boise State opened up a 3-1 advantage in the team score in the battle of the Broncos only to see Santa Clara rally tying the match at three all. That left the decisive point on court six where Platzeck came through with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win to claim the team victory for the Broncos from Boise State.
“All you can say about this victory is that you couldn’t write a better script for a Super Bowl Sunday collegiate tennis match that had more momentum swings and comebacks than a 20-story crane in a hurricane,” said head coach Greg Patton. “In every match that we thought it was a safe bet, it got dangerous and the matches that it seemed we had thrown away the poker chips in the pot, we pocketed gold.”
The win snapped a two-match skid for Boise State who had suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of top-20 teams on the road over the last two weeks. The victory improved the 59th-ranked Broncos to 5-2 on the season and 4-0 at home in Boise.
The Blue and Orange started the day off by taking the team doubles point 2-1 when Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell earned the decisive second victory on court one when they rallied from 3-1 down to win the match 6-4 over the Santa Clara Broncos’ duo of Andrew Gu and Ashot Khacharyan. The Butters/Mitchell tandem improved to 5-2 on the year.
The pair of Abe Hewko and Pedro Platzeck recorded the first doubles victory of the day on court three 6-1 over SCU’s Kamram Khan and Sebastien Mathieu.
“I am so excited how our doubles came back after being a break down at No. 1 with Butters/Mitchell to give us that vital one point lead,” said Patton. “For the second time in the past month a freshman was called to save the day with a third set victory with the team score tied at three all. This time it was Pedro Platzeck who was “called” as the savor of victory. Nothing better than learning the ropes in collegiate tennis than to be put on the pressure cooker and pulling it out.”
Singles opened with Santa Clara tying the team score at 1-1, before Boise State recorded back-to-back wins on courts three and two by Butters and Brian Foley, respectively, for a 3-1 lead in the team score.
Butters was the first Boise State player to win in singles defeating Andrew Gu in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 3 position to improve to 9-5 on the year.
Next finished was Foley as he rallied from a set down to defeat Robert Seby 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 on court two. The senior from Henderson, Nev., is now 7-4 in singles play this season.
Down two at 3-1, Santa Clara came back with a pair of three-set wins at number four and one singles. Boise State’s Abe Hewko attempted to rally from 5-2 down in the third set, but came up short after tying it at 5-5 only to lose the match 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 to Connor Garnett on court four.
Mitchell lost a heartbreaker on court one to Santa Clara’s Khacharyan falling in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The senior from England is now 8-6 overall on the year in singles.
Mitchell’s loss tied the team score at 3-3 setting up Platzeck’s match clinching victory on court six over Santa Clara’s Mathieu. The win was Platzeck’s fourth (4-1) in five singles matches since arriving on campus during the winter break.
Next up for Boise State is a road trip to the Bee Hive state for a pair of important regional matches at Utah on Friday, followed by a contest at Brigham Young on Saturday.
