Boise State Splits on Opening Day

EAGLE, Idaho - Boise State opened the 2017 team duals season with a home split Saturday at the Eagle Tennis Center defeating Whitman 7-0 in the morning, then falling 5-2 to Denver in the evening.

Freshman Harvey Shackleton led Boise State going 3-1 on the day winning both singles matches on court six, then split his doubles matches teaming with Kyle Butters at the No. 2 position.

Jack Heslin, a sophomore, went 2-1 Saturday winning both singles matches and falling in his lone doubles contest completed with teammate Brian Tran.

“I’m really proud of the guys and the way we played today, we were almost 2-0,” said head coach Greg Patton. “It was good to get the young guys some experience with the win against Whitman in the morning. We fought like mad dogs tonight against Denver, but it just didn’t go our way. We are a young time and we are going to learn from matches like this one.”

Boise State will take its 1-1 record into Monday’s morning’s match against the Cal Poly Mustangs at the Eagle Tennis Center, ,start time is 10 a.m.


WHITMAN RECAP
Boise State opened the season Saturday morning against the Whitman College Blues at the Eagle Tennis Center in Eagle, Idaho, recording a commanding 7-0 victory. Boise State claimed the doubles point winning two of three contests, then followed up by sweeping all six singles matches.

Kyle Butters and Harvey Shackleton started the ball rolling with a 6-3 doubles victory on court two over Whitman’s Trevor Fennessy and Gary Ho. Pedro Platzeck and Greg Wischer clinched the doubles point for the Broncos when they put away the Blues’ Adam Rapoport and Daniel Foster in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5).

Butters claimed the singles point on court one with a straight set victory over Zach Hewlin 6-4, 6-1. Court two went Boise State’s way as well where freshman Brian Tran downed Petar Jivkov quickly 6-0, 6-1.

Jack Heslin won at No. 3 singles defeating Ho 6-4, 6-2, followed by Morgan Stone’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fennessy on court five. Number six singles went to the Broncos’ Shackleton as the freshman beat Rapoport in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

The final contest was on court four where Platzeck rallied from one set down to force it to a third set 10-point tiebreaker before defeating Whitman’s Foster 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4)

DENVER RECAP
Boise State found itself in a hole early after Denver took the doubles point 2-0, then followed up by winning No. 2 singles. Brian Tran lost a heartbreaker on court two for Boise State where he fell in three sets to Yannick James 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 as the Pioneers went up 2-0 over the Broncos.

Shackleton pulled the Broncos within one following his victory at No. 6 singles where he dispatched DU’s Wyatt Lovera in three by rallying from one down to get the win 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Heslin tied the match at 2-2 when he rallied from a set one tiebreaker defeat to down Alex Gasson in three 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-3 on court three.

Denver then wrapped up the match claiming wins on courts five, one and four to make it 5-2 Pioneers.
