Boise State Defeats Hawai'i in Season Opener

KAPALUA, Hawaii - Boise State’s men’s tennis team opened the campaign with a commanding 6-1 victory over the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors in Maui Sunday afternoon. The match opened with the 33rd-ranked Broncos winning the doubles point on wins by Garrett Patton/Toby Mitchell and Lewis Roskilly/Thomas Tenreiro. Boise State then put the match away by recording singles victories from Thomas Tenreiro, Patton, Mitchell, Brian Foley and Abe Hewko.
The Boise State pair of Roskilly and Tenreiro recorded the first Boise State win in doubles defeating the Warriros’ Marcel Chan and Kai Wehnelt 6-3 on court two. Patton and Mitchell clinched the team point by tallying a 6-4 win over Hawai’i’s duo of Carter Lam and Nils Schumann at No. 1 doubles.
Hawai’i took No. 3 doubles where Felix Albert and Chas Okomoto handed the Broncos’ duo of Foley and Hewko a 7-5 set back to close the doubles competition.
Hewko started singles out with a straight-set victory over Joakim Pinola on court six by scores of 6-4, 6-1. Tenreiro followed shortly after with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Schumann to make the team score 3-0 in favor of Boise State. Patton clinched the team victory when he put away Hawai’i’s Wehnelt on court two by a second set tiebreaker 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Foley extended the Broncos’ advantage to 5-0 with Boise State’s fourth straight set victory. The junior defeated Lam on court four by winning the first set in a tie breaker before running away with the second, 7-6 (5), 6-0.
The last two singles matches were split with Boise State’s Mitchell winning in a tough three sets which was concluded in a tiebreaker. He downed Okomoto at No. 4 singles 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (4).
The Rainbow Warriors’ lone win came on court five where freshman Lewis Roskilly battled hard through two sets before coming up short to Hawai’i’s Albert 7-6 (4), 7-5 to make the final score 6-1.
The win makes the Broncos 1-0 on the season with a big weekend on tap this coming week in Los Angeles where they will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Kick-Off Weekend. Boise State will open versus No. 41 Texas Tech Friday afternoon on UCLA’s campus. Then depending in the result play either No. 4 UCLA or No. 53 Pepperdine on Saturday. The winner of the bracket advances to the NCAA National Indoor Championship in February.
