Two Broncos finish in top 10 at Kauai Collegiate Invite...

Broncos finished fall schedule with Kauai Collegiate Invite.


LIHUE, Hawaii (11/6/08) Blake Brown and Scott Loewen both finished in the top 10 to lead the Bronco men’s golf team at the Kauai Collegiate Invite this week. While Brown and Loewen finished third and 10th respectively the Boise State team placed 11th out of 14 teams shooting a three-under-par 861 at the Puakea Golf Course on the island of Kauai.  


After a rough first day in which the Broncos shot a team score of 296 (+8) on Monday, Boise State rebounded with a 282 (-6) on Tuesday and a final round of 283 (-5) on Wednesday to finish the 54-hole three day event with a 861 (-3). 


San Diego ran away with the team title with a three-round score of 39-under 825 (286-267-272). UNC-Wilmington’s Derek Wallace took the individual title after an 8-under 64 on Wednesday. Wallace finished the tournament 15-under (67-70-64=201) and a one-stroke win over San Diego’s Jake Yount.


Freshman Blake Brown moved up five spots after day one to place third overall with a 13-under-par 203. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native had his best outing of the fall shooting 68-68-67203 during the three day competition. It was also the highest individual finish for a Bronco this fall.  


Senior Scott Loewen placed in a five-way tie for 10th place after completing the event with a six-under-par 210. The fifth-year senior from Winnipeg, Canada, fired an even-par 72 on Monday followed by four-under-par 68 on Tuesday and a two-under-par 70 on Wednesday. Loewen finished the fall schedule with the best all-around performance for the Broncos recording two top 10 and four top 20 finishes in five tournaments.   


Rounding out the Boise State team was juniors John Baranco and Robbie Richards who tied for 60th with three-round totals of 226 (+10). They were followed by senior Kevin Tarango with a 234 (+18).


The Kauai Collegiate Invite concludes the fall portion of the Boise State men’s golf schedule. They will return to action on Feb. 9, when they open the spring slate with the Thunderbird Invitational at St. George, Utah hosted by Southern Utah University.
