Boise State Travels to Volcano Country

What’s Happening The Boise State University men’s golf team will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, to compete in the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate Invitational, Nov. 6-8.


The Players Boise State will be sending to five golfers to the Shootout including senior Nick Travers, juniors Troy Merritt, Matt Hastings and Scott Loewen as well as freshman Shawn Tonkin.


At the District VII Shootout, Merritt tied the school record for a low round when he shot a 9-under par, 62 in the second round. At the same tournament Merritt also tied for first place with a 201 (-12) for the best finish of his career. In his last competition, Merritt posted a third place finish at the Santa Clara after shooting a 2-under par, 214. Merritt has also recorded two other top 15 finishes this season. He finished the Purple and Red Invitational in a tie for 14th, with a score of 216 (+3) and at the Vandal Classic, Merritt again finished in 14th place when he posted a 216 (E). Merritt was recently named WAC Golfer of the Month for October.


In the three tournaments Travers has participated in this season he has captured three top 10 finishes.  The senior from Boise, Idaho, captured the individual title of the Vandal Classis by shooting an 8-under, 205. He won his first individual title of his career by four strokes over his nearest competitor.  The following week in the Wolf Pack Classic Travers tied for third after shooting a 210 (-6), then tied for seventh at the District VII Shootout with a 5-under, 208. Travers was named September’s WAC Golfer of the Month for his stellar play at the Vandal Fall Classic. Travers is also the number 7 player in the nation, according to the Golfstat Cup Rankings.


Other Broncos with top 25 finishes this season include Hastings, who finished tied for 15th at the Purple and Red Invitational with a 1-over par, 217 and a tied for 16th with a 221 (+5) at the Santa Clara Invitational, Tonkin, who recorded a 213 (E) to tie for 24th at the District VII Shootout and John Baranco who tied for 20th place at the Santa Clara Invitational with a 222 (-6).


Last Time Out The Broncos finished 6th in the 17-team field at the Santa Clara Invitational posting a 889 (+25) as a team. Boise State also had three players finish in the top 25 including Merritt in third place.
