Byrne Tied for 8th-Place After Day One of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate...

Las Cruces, N.M. (10/26/2009) - Boise State junior Chris Byrne carded a five-under 137 to lead the Broncos on day one of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., this afternoon. Byrne fired a career-best 66 (-5) during the morning session followed by a even-par 71 in the afternoon to tie for eighth-place after two rounds. Boise State tallied a two-round team score of 8-over 576 to finish the day in 15th-place out of 17 teams.

The Broncos struggled a bit during the opening session in New Mexico this morning carding a seven-over 291 which placed them in a tie for 15th. They improved during the afternoon round shaving six strokes off their first-round score with a one-over 285. Unfortunately, the majority of the teams also  improved in the second round as Boise State found itself in sole possession of 15th with a 576 (+8), 25-strokes back of tournament leader UNLV. The Rebels entered the week ranked No. 17 nationally by Golfweek Magazine, who tallied a 17-under 551 today.

Following Byrne for the Broncos was freshman Taeksoo Kim who shot a two-round total of even-par 142. The Hawaii native recorded a four-over 75 in round one ranking him tied for 68th. Kim rallied in the second session with a career-best 67 (-4) improving 40 positions to find himself in a five-way tie for 28th at the end of the day.

Rounding out the Boise State roster was John Baranco with a six-over 148 (75-73), followed by Robbie Richards at seven-over 149 (75-74) and Blake Brown with a 10-over 152 (76-76).

The third round will begin at 8:00 a.m. (Mountain) Tuesday morning with a shotgun start. Boise State has a chance of moving up in the standings during the final round tomorrow morning as they find themselves only eight strokes out of seventh-place.
