In the opening round at the par 72, 6926 yard Silver Creek Valley Country Club, the Broncos were affected by the fog and high winds, which contributed to their 301 (+13), however Boise State responded valiantly in the afternoon to register a 289 (+1) and place themselves in the running for a top three finish.
Pacing the Broncos was junior Troy Merritt, who fired a 73 in round one and a 70 in round two for a 143 (-1). Heading into the final round of play Merritt is tied for seventh with three other golfers and remains just three strokes behind second place.
Matt Hastings is tied for 12th through the first day of competition with a 1-over par, 145. After succumbing to the elements with a 76 (+4) in round one, Hastings rebounded with a 3-under par, 69, to remain in the hunt for a top 10 finish.
Joining teammates Hastings and Merritt in the top 20 was John Baranco. Baranco stayed constant in the first two rounds shooting 74 and 73, respectively, for a 147 (+3) and a share of 19th place.
Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos was Shawn Tonkin with a 155 (+11) and Bhris Byrne with a 166 (+22).
