Men's golf ties for fourth at Santa Clara Invitational...

SAN JOSE, Calif. (10/21/08) - Boise State University’s men’s golf team finished the nine-team Santa Clara Invitational tied for fourth place Tuesday afternoon at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Calif. The final round saw the Broncos card a tournament team-best six-over-par 290, the third lowest score of the day. At the end of the two day event they finished the 54-hole tournament with a 887 (+35) tied with Santa Clara University, 30 strokes behind champion South Dakota State University who fired a five-over-par 857.

The Broncos entered the morning 17 strokes out of third place, a lead that was to great to catch with only 18 holes to play. However, Boise State made a valiant effort making up nine strokes on the University of British Columbia by the end of the round. When it was all said and done, the Broncos finished tied for fourth with Santa Clara with a 35-over-par 887. South Dakota State held on to defeat second place Kansas State University by one stroke 857 (+5) to 858 (+6). British Columbia placed third after firing a 15-over-par 299 in the third round giving them a final total of 879 (+27).

Santa Clara made up three strokes on the Broncos during the final round by carding a three-over-par 287 to tie Boise State for fourth, tying Kansas State for the best round of the day. Loyola College (Md.) finished a distant sixth with a final total of 900.

Three Broncos finished in the top 16 led by Scott Loewen and John Baranco who tied for eighth place with 219s while Blake Brown moved up 10 places to tie for 16th with a three-round score of 222.

Scott Loewen entered the day in a two-way tie for eighth place with a three-over-par 145. He shot a three-over-par 74 on Tuesday ending the tournament with a six-over-par 219. John Baranco was one stroke back of Loewen with a two-round total of 146, tied for 10th, entering the morning’s final round. The junior turned in a two-over-par 73 in the final round to move into a two-way tie with Loewen for eighth place.

Blake Brown came storming back in the final round after shooting a 11-over-par 153 on Monday. The freshman entered Tuesday tied for 26th. He shot a two-under-par 69 in the final round to move up 10 places to finish tied for 16th with a final total of 222 (+9).

Rounding out the tournament for Boise State were junior Robbie Richards who carded a 74 in the final round to end with a 227 (+14) tied for 26th. Freshman Ahmed Amlani finished his first collegiate competition tied for 39th with a 235 (+22).
