SAN JOSE, Calif. (10/20/08) - The Boise State men’s golf team is in fourth place after two rounds at the nine-team Santa Clara Invitational being held at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Calif. The Broncos fired a 597 (+29) and are 31 strokes behind the leader South Dakota State University who sits at 566 (-2). Senior Scott Loewen is leading the Broncos with a three-over-par 145 followed closely by junior John Baranco at 146. The final round will start at 8:00 p.m. (Pacific) Tuesday morning.
The Santa Clara Invitational is being played on at Silver Creek Valley Country Club’s 71 par course. The Broncos opened the nine-team competition by struggling through the first round with a team score of 305 (+21) to find themselves in seventh place, 19 strokes out of the lead.
The afternoon was kinder to Boise State who rallied with a eight-over-par 292, the fourth best second round score to move up three positions into fourth place. Unfortunately, the top three teams at the tournament have separated themselves from the pack. South Dakota State leads after day one with a two-under-par 566, followed by Kansas State University at 571 (+3) and the University of British Columbia at 580 (+12). The Broncos’ two round total was a 29-over-par 597 to lead the rest of the pack. They are 17 strokes behind UBC in third and three strokes up on the host team Santa Clara University Broncos sitting in fifth with a 600.
Scott Loewen carded the best two-round score for the Broncos with a three-over-par 145 to finish the day in a two-way tie for eighth place. The senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, turned in a three-over-par 74 during the first round then followed by shaving three strokes off in the second round with an even-par 71.
Junior John Baranco was one stroke back of Loewen with a two-round total of 146, good for a four-way 10th place tie. The junior from Centennial High in Meridian fired a six-over-par 77 in the first round. Then rebounded with the team’s best overall round on the day by carding a two-under-par 69.
Rounding out the day for Boise State were freshman Blake Brown with a 153 (76-77, +11) and junior Robbie Richards with an identical 153 (78-75, +11) score. The duo is in a six-way tie for 26th. Freshman Ahmed Amlani playing in his first collegiate competition turned in a 155 (78-77, +13) to finish the first day in a tie for 34th.
